with Cam Petty
Let’s dive into this week’s episode all about how to juggle owning a business while being a mom, friend, and spouse!
Being a parent or spouse isn’t the only thing that keeps us busy. There are a ton of ways that people fill their time. Community events, social calendars, and sporting events are examples of how our schedules can become consumed with the things that we enjoy. The key to success is planning ahead in managing all of your schedules.
“Getting up before my kiddos gives me time to prep for being a mom and a business leader.”
Cam Petty | The Render Podcast
Before the week begins, do you plan out what your week will look like? What meals are you going to eat? If you have kids, what’re they going to eat? Do you have anything going on socially? What projects need to be accomplished? These are helpful questions to ask yourself before the start of your week. Cam recommends thinking through that on Sunday and then looking over it again on Monday morning as your week begins.
So typically there are overlaps between your home, work, and social calendars. When it comes to actually plan and scheduling each of these areas out, how do you tackle it? Cam shares that she likes using both electronic and written scheduling to stay on top of things.
Google calendar allows Cam to manage all of her work and social tasks as well as stay on top of what her team is accomplishing throughout the week. As a business leader, it’s important to know what your team’s load is like and how they’re structuring their time for accomplishing tasks. Overseeing their Google calendar is wildly helpful if needing to schedule meetings, assign additional tasks, or find a time to touch base.
Color coding different calendars also help Cam stay on top of the different areas of her life. You could use this by thinking of different colors to associate with different types of tasks. If you’re a parent, you could mark anything in your calendars with maybe your kid’s favorite color. You could have work defined as red, social calendar as purple, truly any colors that help you differentiate what you have going on.
Really what we’re trying to point out is to figure out what works best for you and roll with it. If you need some time for trial in error (trying colors, electronic vs. written, etc.), once you figure out what works, lean into it and see how it impacts your accomplishments!
We strive for intentionality in each area of our lives so surely it’s no surprise to hear that Cam wants to be intentional when planning her schedule. We’ve heard the opinion before that some people think quality time feels less intentional when things are planned in advance (such as a movie night with kiddos, a date night, etc.) but let’s be real… some of these things wouldn’t happen if we didn’t take the time to schedule them in. We would argue that it makes the time more intentional by allowing yourself the space to schedule these moments with your partner, your kids, your team, or anyone else you’d like to spend quality time with.
If you’ve been following along with Render for a while, you’ve likely heard of our joy list before. See below.
We encourage you to think of 10 things minimum to choose from that will assist you in experiencing joy daily. Think of some free options and some that cost a little money. As Cam shares in the episode, consider cold and hot options for this list! Sounds silly but it helps your list stay consistent throughout the seasons! If you can’t think of anything… here are some of our team’s favorites:
Again, making time to do at least one thing from your list a week is helpful in keeping you sane amongst all the different directions life tries to pull you in. Yes, there are times when we need to take care of kids or prioritize work, but do not neglect yourself!
Until next time on the Render Podcast!
Joyfully,
