In today’s episode of The Render Podcast, we are continuing the In Conversation With Series with guest Marsi Hubbard, owner of Brite Beauty, an on location and in studio beauty company based in Dallas, Texas. Cam sat down with Marsi and talked about all things glam, of course, and more importantly, the grit it takes when it comes to owning a business in the event industry.
As an entrepreneur, you have to be obsessed with your work and what you do, because you will be waking up daily and doing it. The true blessings with your business come in time and take consistent work and showing up. There are moments when you are on top of the world and everything is going great, then there are moments where you may be worried or frantic about booking your next events. Knowing how to navigate all of the emotions that come with the grit and the glam of your business is so important.
Let’s break this down. What exactly is grit and glam? This week’s episode is titled this because well, it is perfect for chatting with the beauty queen herself, Marsi, but it means more than that. Grit and glam is a good way to describe what it is like when owning a business. There is the grit, the putting in the blood, sweat, and tears into your business to make the moves you want to see. There is also the glam, the part when everything is picking up and going incredibly well! It is so important for you to show up and be the best version of yourself each day, especially as a leader or a business owner. That could look like getting up and dressing business casual, maybe that is by doing your hair and makeup daily, perhaps it could be sitting on your porch and journaling your morning thoughts, or what if that is showing up for yourself each morning and hitting the gym before work? Whatever that looks like, do it! In a world where we have become super relaxed (hello, Covid and remote working), it is nice to get up and start your day by doing an intentional task to set the tone for the day!
In almost 5 years, Marsi has grown Brite Beauty so big that she now has over 40 employees. When asked what she has done to get to this level of success, she stays true to the “show up to go up” rule. Having gone through Covid and being a relatively new business, Brite Beauty has certainly shined bright during all of the challenges that come with running a business. She puts her best foot forward each day, shows up with a positive attitude and adjusts as adjustments need to be made to learn, grow, and be her best self. While this may sound elementary, it is the truth! When you work hard toward a goal and stay true to putting in the work, you will see the fruits of your labor. Training your mind is just like training your body. Mentally getting ready to put the work in and figure it out is the key to going up from where you are.
You don’t know what you don’t know. Perhaps you know that something is not working by the efforts that you are putting in with no return on that, so what shift(s) can you make to see that return? Maybe getting stuck in your own head to figure something out, but you should step outside of your comfort zone and out of yourself.
If you don’t know the answer, do the best that you can with what you know every single day and then start researching and learning what you don’t know so that you can get those results that you are looking for. By doing this, you can become a better leader and learn how to make the appropriate shift as needed. The more you continue to educate yourself and learn, the more you will be successful. Doing this takes a lot of grit and life is not always going to offer the easier route. You have to work at it and make the changes necessary to see change. You have to really get up and do the dang thing! Show up and go up — it is so simple, but is also a great mantra to continue working to grow!
Aligning with what we talked about earlier, when you show up and do the work needed to accomplish something, are you actually prioritizing tasks that are going to get you somewhere or doing small tasks that may not be as important? At Render, we do team check-ins each week and talk through what our 3 needle moving activities are going to be. We look at the upcoming week so we can continue to hold ourselves and the team accountable to continue producing needle moving results. Does that look like connecting with other entrepreneurs in your industry? Or what about cold calling or cold emailing planners or other leaders? Eventually something is going to click and lead to a result from the work you have put in. It could be you doing these things daily or weekly, but by doing the work, you will see the fruits of your labor one way or the other.
It can be so easy to get caught up in the big moments and peaks of what has happened in your business, but how can you continue growing? You can see the highlight reel on social media and it can turn into you beating yourself up, but what if you redirected that and turned it into you wanting to work on your growth? How can you take your goals and turn that drive into the effort it takes to get there? Studies show that who you surround yourself with is who you will be inspired by.
Having really smart people around you that can give you advice is crucial to the growth of your business and of your mind. If you are not sure where to find your people at or who to surround yourself with, look into joining local organizations that revolve around your industry and begin networking within that circle! When you surround yourself with the right people with the right mindset, that is when growth happens. Look at what you could offer to that person and build this relationship to continue supporting one another! When you pour into someone else’s cup, your cup will then get filled, too!
If you are looking for a good read to help shape you and get your mind into this growth mindset, Cam and Marsi have a few personal recommendations for you!
