Are you curious about starting your own floral business?
Whether you’re a freelancer just starting out or someone who wants to know more about flowers, this episode is for you! Today Cam and Anna Beth, one of our floral freelancers, chat all about the floral foundations of starting your own floral business.
Anna Beth is one of our favorite floral freelancers! She has been working with us on a weekly basis and is a huge part of our team. Anna Beth has years of experience with flowers, going all the way back to when she was a kid! She grew up watching her parents garden, then started her own floral business a few years back. During the episode, Cam and Anna Beth talk about all the things you need to start a floral business of your own.
Start working under someone who has been doing floral that you admire.
There is a lot of hands-on experience before you can dive into events! It’s important that you shadow other florists that you admire to learn the ins and outs of having a floral business. Remember: There is a big difference between being a floral designer and having a floral business. It’s not all pretty flowers and designing. There are a lot of things that come with it like client communication, pricing, processing flowers, and so much more. You can also attend floral conferences to learn more about floral design!
There is a lot that goes into your floral pricing. Make sure that you have a process behind your pricing instead of coming up with something random. You should have a 50% margin at minimum, but make sure that you are taking freelancers into factor and adding any fees like travel, installation, etc.
A common issue in the industry is that clients find floral to be too expensive. Make sure you educate your customers on the work that it takes to be a florist! Your time is valuable and your clients will appreciate someone who is dedicated and priced according to their experience. Flowers are a luxury good and they truly make or break your event.
Having a relationship with your suppliers is so important in the floral industry! Get wholesalers that you can connect with and take an interest in their lives. Build relationships with them and be their repeat customer. There is a mass shortage of floral right now because of the pandemic, so be kind to them if they don’t have exactly what you need. We are all trying to do the best we can, and your floral wholesalers will be willing to help more to a repeat client that is kind!
Pro Tip: Get on your preferred wholesaler’s email list! A lot of them will send out their product per week with pricing.
